European youth, housing and human rights organisations have called for more action to end youth homelessness on 10 December, Human Rights Day. The action, coordinated by the FEANTSA Youth network, was aimed at raising awareness for the growing problem of youth homelessness and housing exclusion in the EU. On average, young people make up 20-30% of the total number of homeless people in the majority of European countries. In many European countries, youth homelessness is rising at an alarming rate. Denmark witnessed an increase of 105% between 2009-2017, Ireland a 93% increase between 2014-2017.
On social media, the organisations called for action to:
- Develop a definition of youth homelessness;
- Collect better data on youth homelessness;
- Protect vulnerable youth leaving state care from becoming homeless without adequate supports.
