The Danish City of Frederiksberg Endorsed the Homeless Bill of Rights

Frederiksberg is part of Greater Copenhagen and an independent municipality within the capital of Denmark. It has a population of just over 100,000 and is the most densely populated municipality in Denmark, covering an area of only 8.7 square kilometres. In February 2024, a total of 2,776 citizens were registered as homeless in the Greater Copenhagen area (Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, and the surrounding regions). In Frederiksberg, 137 people were registered as homeless, a significant increase from the 80 homeless individuals recorded in the February 2022 survey.

Inspired by Copenhagen's signing of the Homeless Bill of Rights in October 2023, the chair of Frederiksberg's Social Affairs Committee, Mette Bang Larsen, proposed that Frederiksberg become the second city in Denmark to sign the Homeless Bill of Rights. The city views this endorsement as a commitment to reducing homelessness and prioritising the rights of homeless citizens in future projects and municipal strategies.

The endorsement took place today, 27th September 2024, at Frederiksberg City Hall.

The Homeless Bill of Rights has been translated into Danish from the original English version by Pia Justesen, a human rights lawyer with a PhD from Aalborg University. She is also the author of a small booklet describing the individual rights in the bill, available in Danish. Both can be downloaded below.

We look forward to hearing how Frederiksberg plans to use the Homeless Bill of Rights in its current and future work on homelessness.
